That's the only use of them I've ever heard of. I know some fennic scientists have claimed some miracle properties from them. So that begs the question.

It can't be anything bad. Gearheart wouldn't be transporting these to Cryostoria if he thought there was something malicious involved.

I think you're onto something with the medical idea, though. If Cryostoria's sick, he'd want to hide it, and would probably be willing to try experimental treatments.
